How to recover hacked Instagram account
If you believe your account has been hacked, there are various steps you can take to secure your account. Some of the recovery steps may not be available to you depending on the type of account you’re trying to recover, but we recommend trying all of them.
Check your email account:
If an email has been received from [email protected] informing you that your email address has been changed, you will have the option to revert this change by selecting “revert this change” in the email. If additional information, such as your password, has been modified and you cannot change your email address, a login link or security code can be requested from Instagram.
Request a login link from Instagram:
– To help Instagram verify your account ownership, you can request a login link to your email address or phone number. To request a login link:
– On the login page, tap “Get help logging in” for Android or “?Forgotten password” for iPhone.
– Enter your username, email address, or phone number associated with your account, then tap “Next”.
Note: If you don’t have access to the username, email address, or phone number associated with your account, enter the recent login information you used, then tap on “Can’t reset your password” below the Next button, and follow the on-screen instructions.
– Choose your email address or phone number, then tap “Next”.
– Click the login link in your email or SMS and follow the on-screen instructions.

Requesting a security code or support from Instagram:
If you cannot recover your account using the login link sent to you, you can request support from Instagram.
Requesting a security code or support from Instagram on Android:
- On the login page, below “Log in,” tap on “Get help logging in.”
- Enter your username, email address, or phone number associated with your account, then tap on “?Need more help.” Note that if you have multiple Instagram accounts, you may need to select the account you’re having trouble logging into first, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Choose your email address or phone number, then tap “Send security code.”
- If you didn’t receive the security code, below “Send security code,” tap “I can’t access this email address or phone number,” then follow the on-screen instructions.
Requesting support from Instagram on iPhone:
- From the login link page, tap on “?Need more help” below “Send log in link.” Choose your email address or phone number, then tap “Send security code.”
- If you didn’t receive the security code, tap “I can’t access this email address or phone number” below “Send security code,” then follow the on-screen instructions.
Ensure you enter a secure email address that only you can access. Once you’ve submitted your request, you should receive an email from Instagram.
Requesting support or a recovery code in the Instagram Android app:
- Open the Instagram app and tap “Get help logging in.”
- Enter your username, email address, or phone number, then tap “Next.”
- Select “Can’t reset your password.”
These steps should help you request a security code or support from Instagram. Remember to provide a secure email address that only you have access to. When you submit your request, you should receive an email from Instagram.

Request support or a hidden code in the Instagram Android app:
- Tap on Next.
- You will be asked to hold your iPhone at eye level. Tap on Next.
- Send a selfie video and then tap on Send.

- Tap on Next.
- You will be redirected to the Instagram Help Center.
- Select your issue and proceed accordingly.
Verify your identity:
If you have submitted a support request for an account without a photo of yourself, you should receive an automated email response from the Support Team at Meta. To assist Instagram in verifying your identity, you will be asked to provide the email address or phone number you registered with and the device you used (such as iPhone, Android, iPad, etc.).
Suppose you have submitted a support request for an account with your photos. In that case, you will be asked to take a selfie video and rotate your head in different directions to verify that you are a real person and confirm your identity. Once you have sent the selfie video to verify your identity, you will receive an email from Instagram at the secure email address you provided. Please note that the video you send will never be visible on Instagram and will be deleted within 30 days. If your identity is not verified based on your submitted video, you can send a new one for reevaluation.
Unfortunately, this process can take days, weeks, or even months. Most of it is automated, meaning you cannot directly contact Instagram if you encounter an issue. Since this method is the best process for recovering a hacked Instagram account, following these steps is much better than allowing hackers to gain full control of your account.
Recovering an account that you still have access to:
If your account can still be logged in but is suspected to have been hacked or an attempt has been made, the following steps can be taken to help secure your account.
Check your phone number and email address in your account settings:
Go to your account settings.
Verify your phone number and email address. These important recovery options allow you to reset your password and regain access to your account. Before changing your password, go to Settings > Account > Personal Information and make sure that a hacker hasn’t changed your email address or phone number.
Log out of all active Instagram sessions:
Go to Settings > Security > Login Activity.
Tap on “Log out” next to each listed session to close all active sessions. Repeat this for each logged-in session.
Change your password:
Change your Instagram password by going to your Profile> Settings > Security > Password.
Choose a unique and strong password that is at least eight characters long and includes a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA):

Use an authenticator app for 2FA instead of SMS, as scammers can hack or steal your phone and bypass this additional security measure for SMS-based authentication.
Revoke access to apps and websites:
Do you remember any apps or websites you granted permission to link to your Instagram account? It may come as a shock, but your actions may be a reason for your account being hacked.
Most of these apps and websites are untrustworthy, and after gaining access to your account, they try to hack it using the permissions you granted.
To revoke access to these apps and websites in the Instagram app for iPhone and Android:
- Open your Profile and tap on the three-line menu.
- Tap on “Settings” and select “Security.”
- Then, choose “Apps and Websites.”
- Now, click on the apps and websites to which you want to revoke access and select “Revoke Access”. You can also use this direct link to revoke access to apps and websites.
